About the Founder

I’m  a certified Yoga instructor, but my full-time work is as a touring musician.  My unusual schedule and circumstances mean that I have to practice wherever I can make it work…

When I first turned to Yoga, it was for access to a portable fitness routine, to combat weight gain, and to help with depression.  Over the years, I’ve noticed that

a daily practice is much more effective than sporadic classes and/or a few longer sessions a week.

This is especially true about yoga’s affect on my depression. In spite of this, like many students, I’ve had the hardest time committing to a daily practice.

So, one morning after practicing in Chicago, I was taken by the beautiful view I had out the front windows, and the peaceful, sparsely-furnished hardwood floor where my mat lay.  I decided to take a photo of it for my MergeYoga blog.

It would remind me of the rewards of inserting the practice of yoga into my surroundings… and perhaps it would inspire my readers to roll out their mats as well.

While taking the photo I realized that my mat has seen many a floor, and that my life and schedule, as they are, afford the opportunity to practice yoga in a variety of settings — some much more ideal than others!

Since I was working on making my practice a daily habit, I decided to take a picture of my mat everywhere, every day, and post it online.

The Daily Mat motivates me to continue practicing every day, in spite of the unusual schedule and changing settings.  There have been mornings when the only thing that’s gotten me up and sun-saluting is this:

“I have to get up and roll out the mat.  I need to be able to take the picture.”

Sharing the pictures with my community keeps me accountable, but it also motivates my fellow yogis.  Because here’s the deal:

If I can fit it in, you can too.

So join in. Take your pictures.  Send them to me. And follow the yoga community as we all commit to a daily habit of yoga.

See you on the mat.
